  1. Are there stairs and elevators in areas that are convenient     

            to rental units?  Are there enough stairs and elevators in    

            relation to the number of units?


  1. Are there at least 2 emergency exits on each floor?


  1. Are there working fire alarms and extinguishers in the lobby, hallways, common areas and in each living unit?


  1. Distance to shopping - walking or riding


  1. Is public transportation available and convenient to the building?


  1. What is the distance to medical facilities and doctors?

  1. Is the complex accessible from external streets?

         

  1. How/when are outside non-lobby entrances secured?

Contracts, Rules, Costs, Deposits, Financial Assistance & More


  1. Is the apartment leased or rented on a month-to-month basis?


  1. Ask for a copy of the lease or rental agreement (and an application) to review.


  1. What are the building rules and regulations? (Get a copy to review.)


  1. Are rent subsidies available?  Do they accept rent vouchers?


  1. What is the upfront cost (first/last month’s rent; security deposit; utility deposit, etc.)  (Get these costs in writing.)


  1. Insist on looking at the unit (and going over the management’s inspection list) prior to signing any agreement.


  1. Make sure you re-inspect the unit (complete the move-in inspection list and back up the inspection list with photos or a video) prior to moving in.


  1. Whenever possible have the agreement reviewed by a qualified professional before signing it.  (Most communities offer free or low-cost legal clinics and assistance; check with your county social services or Area Agency on Aging for more information.)
